CSCI 3907: Seminar: Performance-Aware Programming

CSCI 3907: Toochain setup

Whether you're working on a Mac, Windows, or Linux computer, you're going to want to do your work in this course in a terminal window. Although it's likely possible to use an IDE like VSCode or Xcode, I'm going to test your code in the terminal window, and if your IDE has added stuff that causes your code to break on my computer, you'll get no credit.

If you're working on a Linux machine, like the ones in our classroom and lab, you're all set. For Mac or Windows follow the instructions below:

Mac OS X

In Spotlight (the desktop search widget), find the Terminal application, open it, and (I suggest) add it to the dock of apps at the bottom of the desktop.

Since OS X is UNIX, you've already got most of what you need, until we get to the FPGA part of the course in the final few weeks. If you're a fan of the git command-line, as I am, you'll want to run the following command in your terminal to set that up:

sudo xcode-select --install

You should get an alert asking you whether you want to install these tools. Once you agree to the install, it should take a minute or two, depending on your internet connection.

Windows

Google wsl ubuntu and follow the directions you get.
